Moderation Principles

Purpose

Effective moderation is not measured by the number of punishments issued, but by the health of the community.

The goal of moderation is to maintain a fair, welcoming, and enjoyable environment while preserving player trust through consistent, transparent, and evidence-based decision making.


Protect the Community

Every moderation action should answer one question:

Does this action protect the community?

Moderation exists to resolve problems—not create them.

Whenever possible, choose the action that restores healthy gameplay while minimizing unnecessary disruption.


Be Fair

Every player deserves equal treatment.

Moderators should:

  • Apply the rules consistently.
  • Avoid favoritism.
  • Separate personal feelings from moderation decisions.
  • Consider the context surrounding each incident.
  • Treat new and veteran players equally.

Consistency builds trust.


Use the Least Necessary Intervention

Not every situation requires punishment.

Whenever appropriate, staff should begin with education before escalation.

Examples include:

  • Answering questions.
  • Clarifying rules.
  • Issuing verbal reminders.
  • Providing warnings before disciplinary action.

Discipline should increase only when behavior does not improve.


Evidence First

Whenever possible, moderation decisions should be supported by evidence.

Evidence may include:

  • Server logs
  • Chat logs
  • Screenshots
  • Video recordings
  • Firsthand staff observation
  • Player reports that can be corroborated

Avoid making assumptions when evidence is incomplete.


Remain Professional

Players may become frustrated, emotional, or confrontational.

Staff should remain calm.

Avoid:

  • Arguing
  • Insults
  • Sarcasm
  • Escalating conflicts
  • Public hostility

Professional behavior often de-escalates situations before disciplinary action becomes necessary.


Explain Your Decisions

Whenever practical, explain why moderation action is being taken.

Players are more likely to accept decisions when they understand:

  • Which rule was violated.
  • What behavior needs to change.
  • What will happen if the behavior continues.

Transparency improves trust.


Consistency Over Speed

Taking a few extra minutes to gather evidence is preferable to making an incorrect decision.

Staff should never feel pressured to act immediately if additional review would produce a better outcome.

Accuracy is more important than speed.


Learn From Every Incident

Moderation is a continuous learning process.

After difficult or unusual cases, staff are encouraged to discuss:

  • What went well.
  • What could have been handled differently.
  • Whether procedures should be improved.

Every investigation is an opportunity to strengthen the team.

Moderators are entrusted with significant responsibility.

Every decision should be guided by fairness, professionalism, evidence, and the long-term health of the Barren Land community.
