Staff Roles & Responsibilities

Purpose

Every staff member contributes to maintaining a fair, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for the Barren Land community. While responsibilities vary by role, all staff members are expected to uphold the same standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect.


General Expectations

All staff members are expected to:

  • Follow the Staff Code of Conduct.
  • Enforce server rules consistently and impartially.
  • Treat all players with respect.
  • Base moderation decisions on evidence whenever possible.
  • Document significant moderation actions.
  • Ask for guidance when uncertain.
  • Support fellow staff members professionally, even when opinions differ.

No staff member is expected to know every answer. Asking questions is encouraged.


Trial Administrators

Trial Administrators are learning the team's moderation procedures and demonstrating sound judgment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Responding to player reports.
  • Learning server rules and procedures.
  • Assisting with investigations.
  • Gathering evidence.
  • Seeking review before major disciplinary actions when required.
  • Asking questions whenever uncertain.

The trial period exists to develop confidence and consistency—not to test perfection.


Administrators

Administrators are trusted to independently handle most moderation situations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Investigating reports.
  • Applying disciplinary actions.
  • Documenting incidents.
  • Assisting newer staff members.
  • Maintaining professionalism during difficult interactions.
  • Escalating unusual or sensitive situations when appropriate.

Senior Staff

Senior staff provide leadership and ensure moderation remains consistent across the team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing difficult cases.
  • Providing guidance to moderators.
  • Resolving policy questions.
  • Handling appeals.
  • Updating procedures when necessary.
  • Mentoring developing staff members.

Leadership

Leadership is responsible for the long-term health of both the staff team and the community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing policy.
  • Managing staff appointments.
  • Resolving internal disputes.
  • Reviewing major disciplinary actions.
  • Maintaining governance documentation.
  • Supporting a positive staff culture.

Leadership should remain approachable and open to feedback.


Shared Responsibility

Every staff member shares responsibility for protecting the integrity of the server.

Rank determines authority—not accountability.

Professionalism, honesty, and consistency are expected from every member of the team.
